Blizzard Warning Issued for Western Alaska Coast Through Early Friday

The National Weather Service office in Fairbanks, Alaska has issued a Blizzard Warning for four areas along and near the Bering Strait coast. The warning took effect at 6:02 a.m. Alaska Daylight Time on Wednesday, October 22, and remains in effect until 1:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24 – roughly 43 hours of hazardous winter weather.

The areas covered are the Southern Seward Peninsula Coast, the village of Shishmaref, the Bering Strait Coast, and the Interior Seward Peninsula. A blizzard warning means strong winds combined with falling or blowing snow will drop visibility to a quarter-mile or less for extended periods, making travel dangerous or impossible.

What residents might notice

Expect near-whiteout conditions at times, snowdrifts blocking roads and doorways, and wind chills well below freezing. In small coastal communities like Shishmaref, where there are no connecting roads, blizzard conditions can halt local travel by snowmachine or ATV and may delay flights, which are often the only way in or out. Blowing snow can also coat power lines and contribute to scattered outages.

Who is affected: residents of the Seward Peninsula and Bering Strait region, including Shishmaref and surrounding villages, plus anyone with planned air travel through regional hubs such as Nome.

Practical steps for those in the warning area:

– Stay off the roads and avoid travel between villages until the warning expires; conditions can deteriorate faster than expected.
– Check that you have several days of food, water, medications, batteries, and fuel for heat, and keep phones charged in case of outages.
– If you must go outside, dress in layered, windproof clothing and let someone know your route and expected return.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do right now if I live in the warned area?
Stay indoors and postpone any travel, including snowmachine trips between villages, until the warning lifts at 1:00 a.m. Friday. Make sure you have heat fuel, food, and charged devices before conditions peak.

How long will this blizzard last?
The warning runs about 43 hours, from 6:02 a.m. Wednesday, October 22 through 1:00 a.m. Friday, October 24 (Alaska Daylight Time), though the NWS could extend or trim it as the storm evolves.

Will flights to Nome or the villages be affected?
Very likely – blizzard conditions with visibility under a quarter-mile frequently ground regional air service in western Alaska. Check directly with your airline before heading to the airport.

Is this unusual for October in this region?
Early-season blizzards are not unusual along the Bering Strait coast, where fall storms can be intense. The main risk is that some residents may not yet be fully set up for winter, so double-check supplies now.
